Preparing for Great Lent begins with the tradition of feasting and celebrating before fasting. In many Western cultures, Mardi Gras is the party held before Lent, but in Armenia, the festival is called Poon Paregentan. These celebrations are all about good food and fun!

Many Armenian churches and community centers organize masquerade parties based on ancient traditions. In the villages, revelers perform tricks and play music, while town centers are filled with folk dances and parades. Towards the end, people customarily eat yogurt and rice pudding and then go to bed with Easter eggs to represent the good tidings of Christ's resurrection to come.
