THE END OF THE LINE: VITAMIN PRODUCTION IN ARMENIA

by AGBU News

Built in 1969, the Yerevan Vitamin Factory is at a standstill. The production of C, D and E vitamins were all dependent on shipments of raw materials from various parts of the former Soviet Union and abroad. Vitamin C has not been produced for four years, the delivery of acetone from Chechen (Russia) and caustic soda from the closed Nayrit plant no longer available. Vitamin E, produced in four plants, Kiev, Yerevan and two in Moscow, was stopped in January because of the lack of foreign currency ordinarily provided by the Soviet government to purchase raw materials from Switzerland and Germany. The resources for Vitamin D, used in veterinary medicine, have been blockaded by Azerbaijan.
