With the recent passing of Mihran Agbabian, Ph.D, the Central Board of AGBU marks the loss of a transformative figure in the field of higher education and a fellow board member who served the organization with dedication from 1989-1999. “These were critical years for the AGBU in responding to such monumental events as the devastating earthquake in Armenia and the challenging early years of independence,” noted AGBU President Berge Setrakian.

“At a time when national institutions were collapsing all around the homeland, Dr. Agbabian played a vital role in the establishment of the American University of Armenia to keep the light of intellectual and academic pursuit burning brightly for Armenia’s best and brightest,” Mr. Setrakian went on to say. Fortunately, he was blessed with the longevity to witness the success of multiple generations of AUA students.

As the university’s first president, while also serving as an AGBU Central Board member, Agbabian was also engaged in the lasting partnership between the AUA and AGBU that continues to this day through AGBU scholarships, grants and support for various initiatives.
