There’s still time before the EU announces the winning candidate for the 2019 “European Capital of Culture,” but the city of Plovdiv is already making headway thanks to support from the AGBU Young Professionals (YP) of Plovdiv.
The YPs have forged a partnership with the AGBU Plovdiv Chapter and Plovdiv 2019, an organization established by the local government to help the city win its bid. This fall, when Plovdiv 2019 sponsored a performance in the city’s center, which drew close to 1,000 guests, the AGBU Malvina Manukyan youth theater group appeared on stage. They had plenty of time to practice thanks to the YP Group, which provided them, and all the event’s performers, with the space to rehearse.
Each “Capital of Culture” contender is vetted based on events they organize and ways they contribute to cultural diversity. The success of the performance highlighted the key role the Armenian community plays in strengthening diversity across Plovdiv. It also proved that PLOVIDV 2019 has a reliable partner in AGBU as it sets its sights on taking the EU title.
