On July 30, 2010, AGBU's Young Professionals (YP) of Northern California launched their first-ever International Club Mixer at 545 Steak Lounge in San Francisco. More than 100 young Armenians came together, joined by young professionals from the Greek and Persian communities. The event officially launched AGBU-YPNC's 2011 fundraising campaign for the AGBU Children's Centers in Yerevan, bringing in $1,100. Each year, AGBU YPNC and other YP Groups around the globe adopt charities from the AGBU family of projects; this year, all YPNC fundraising efforts will benefit the Children's Centers.
The fundraising drive will culminate with the renowned AGBU San Francisco Gala Weekend 2011, scheduled for February 11-13, 2011, when Armenian YPs from across the globe will get together in San Francisco for a weekend of events. "We are proud to support this important charity, which provides a safe and constructive environment for youth in Yerevan," said Steven Cherezian, co-chairman of YPNC. "This mixer was an event we've wanted to host to bring our communities together. Based on the turnout for the International Club Mixer, we feel confident the support will continue from the community."
Next up for AGBU YPNC is a series of events across various Bay Area communities, designed to reach more of the Armenian young professionals in the area, and there is another fundraiser in the works for later in the year. Planning for AGBU's San Francisco Gala 2011 will continue as the group prepares to host the 12th annual installment of the signature YPNC event.
The AGBU Children's Centers in Armenia were created in 1993, when AGBU and the Holy See of Etchmiadzin joined forces to establish three Children's Centers in Yerevan. These Centers provide art, computer, crafts, dance, gymnastics, history, language and music programs to local children after regular school hours and during the summer. All three Centers also house a chapel and host weekly church services and Bible studies. About 4,000 students, ages five to twenty-one, are enrolled in the three Children's Centers, which are overseen by an administrative staff of over 300. Over the years, the AGBU Children's Centers Performing Arts Troupes have traveled to Brazil, Canada, Georgia, Poland, Russia, the United States, and Uruguay to present their talents at various cultural events, attracting tens of thousands of attendees. The Centers have undergone extensive renovations to update classroom facilities in the past few years. The three AGBU Senior Dining Centers are also located at the Arapkir, Malatya and Nork Children's Centers.
