YP Buenos Aires Hosts Turkish-Armenian Journalist Mihran Tomasyan

Over the past few months, AGBU has put the spotlight on Armenian communities in Turkey, through our GORIZ seminar in Istanbul, the screening of Eric Nazarian’s film “Bolis” in New York, and a new partnership with UTI. The AGBU Young Professionals of Buenos Aires (YP Buenos Aires) joined these efforts by hosting Mihran Tomasyan, a contributor to the Turkish paper Agos, book editor and professional dancer, at the local AGBU Center.

Tomasyan, who grew up in Istanbul and attended the city’s Getronagan Armenian High School, shared what everyday life is like within the Armenian diaspora community in Turkey. He discussed Armenian schools, the state’s education system and the role of the Armenian Church.

The rise of civil society in Turkey was also a key part of Tomasyan’s presentation. He pointed to the hundreds of Turkish citizens who gathered in Taksim Square this year to commemorate the Armenian Genocide, joining AGBU Europe, the Hrant Dink Foundation, and other grassroots non-profits.  

Tomasyan’s visit was an opportunity for cross-cultural exchange: while he relayed his experiences overseas, the YPs spoke of their own activities in Buenos Aires. Before he headed north to continue touring Argentina, the YPs were already planning future trips to visit him.
