On May 6, 2009, the finals of the Armenian Republican Interschool Chess Tournament took place in Shushi, Karabakh, with the participation of 18 teams from all the regions of Armenia, Karabakh and Javakh (Georgia). The competition is jointly organized by the Republic of Armenia's Chess Federation, Education and Science Ministry and AGBU.
The objectives of the national student tournament are to support the development of chess in Armenia, foster new talent and help maintain Armenia's leading position in the world chess community. About 700 schools from across Armenia, Karabakh and Javakh vie for the championship title. AGBU provided 2000 chess boards to participating schools and awarded medals and personal computers to the winning teams.
Karabakh President Bako Sahakyan attended the championship event and congratulated all the participants in the finals. Also in attendance at the award ceremony were Smbat Lputian, Vice President of the Armenian Chess Federation, Ashot Ghazarian, AGBU Armenian Representation Director, Vrezh Ordian, Deputy Director of Armenia's Chess Academy, Razmik Hovsepian, Chairman of the Karabakh Sports Committee, and Arpat Avanessian, President of Karabakh's Chess Federation.
This year's championship was won by three Yerevan teams: School #171 (1st), School #55 (2nd), and School #147 (3rd). The members of the first-place team are: Tigran Iskandaryan, Maxim Gevorkian, Magelan Mkhitaryan and Liana Avoyan.
