Last month, the AGBU South American Olympic Games celebrated its 33rd year by welcoming a new group of athletes to the court – the all-girls volleyball team from Rosario, Argentina. The players joined over 100 youth from Buenos Aires, Cordoba, Montevideo and Sao Paulo in Brazil to compete in everything from basketball to backgammon.

Friends and family from across South America filled the stands of the Sao Paulo AGBU Alex Manoogian Center from July 5 to 9, 2013, in support of the young athletes. AGBU Sao Paulo Chapter Chair Helio Balukian praised the annual event, stating, “These games provide youth with the unique opportunity to, through sports, learn more about AGBU’s history, become a part of its history, and connect with their peers.”

For the Rosario players, those connections were first forged over a decade ago, when a delegation from the AGBU Buenos Aires Liga de Jóvenes (youth group) visited the city. The representatives immediately identified a need to better organize the local Armenian community. They have since helped establish a central office, Armenian languages classes, social events that dozens of Rosario families now enjoy, and the distribution of Generación 3 magazine, published by the AGBU youth group in Buenos Aires. Rosario’s participation in the Olympic Games shows just how far AGBU is expanding its reach across Argentina – and all over South America.
