The AGBU Sofia Chamber Orchestra said goodbye to winter last week with a production entitled “Spring Dreams” that drew dozens to the city’s Pancho Vladigerov National Academy of Music.

The event marked the beginning of the eighth season for the orchestra, which, for years, has promoted Armenian music across Sofia’s diverse communities. Led by Maestro Bedros Papazian, the program wove together traditional Armenian songs with Western classical music and contemporary poetry.

Actor Valentin Balabanov recited works by Bulgaria’s celebrated poets Elisaveta Bagryana, Petya Dubarova and Nikola Vaptsarov and the orchestra performed pieces by Mozart, Antonio Vivaldi and Georges Bizet. In addition to ensemble performances, the evening featured soloists Petya Dimitrova (violinist), Kalina Hristova (violinist), and Simeon Pilibosyan (tenor), who drew repeated rounds of applause.

Following a rendition of “Hoy Nazan,” an audience favorite, the concert came to a close with Astor Piazzolla’s famous tango, “Prepárense.”
