SIVAM Career Development Initiative Connects Russia’s Top Professionals With Moscow University Students

A supporter of AGBU programs in Russia and a partner organization within the worldwide AGBU Young Professionals Network, SIVAM, an organization for young professionals based in Moscow, has wrapped up its eighth and final event of the season in its career development initiative, Perspectives. A monthly speaker series, Perspectives puts high-achieving Russian university students of Armenian descent in the same room with Armenian professionals who have risen to the top of their fields and can offer valuable career advice and networking opportunities.

Launched in 2008, this year proved to be Perspectives' most successful yet, bringing notable guests such as Ruben Aganbegyan, president of MICEX- RTS, the largest stock exchange in Russia; Rafael Minasbekyan, vice president of OAO Rosgosstrakh, Eastern Europe's largest insurance company; Gor Nahapetyan, managing partner of Troika Dialog, a prominent Russian investment firm; Aram Pakhchanian, vice president of ABBYY Software Company, one of the leading software companies in Russia; as well as Gagik Zakaryan, president of Uniastrum Bank, a top 100 Russian Bank.

Each keynote speaker detailed his professional background, answered students' questions, and spoke one-on-one with them to discuss job search strategies. Rafael Astaduryan, SIVAM Board Member and founder of Perspectives, commented, "At each of our events , we were excited to see students engaging with professionals and exchanging ideas, as well as email addresses. The speakers were very open to maintaining contact with those who attended, and invited the submission of resumes and business propositions, which is most encouraging to all the students as they pursue their professions." The overwhelmingly positive response from attendees over this past year, and the last three, motivated Astaduryan and his colleagues to organize the event on a monthly basis instead of annually, as initially planned.

When Perspectives resumes in September following a summer recess, SIVAM plans to begin broadcasting a podcast that will supplement the talks. Giving students the ability to listen when and wherever, the podcasts will feature young professionals who can provide inspiring anecdotes as they set out on their career paths. Pilot versions should be available by the end of August.
