On July 17, 2011, close to 130 members of the Armenian-Australian community in Melbourne had the exceptional opportunity to attend a musical concert by the SIMA Musical Trio. The show took place at the Glen Waverley Community Centre near the city of Melbourne, Australia.
Connected by their Armenian heritage and passion for music, the members of the New York-based ensemble include pianist Sofya Melikyan, cellist Ani Kalayjian, and violinist Sami Merdinian. These young musicians formed their trio two years ago and have since performed in Argentina, Canada, Spain, the United States, and now Australia. The musicians have studied at top institutions, including Juilliard, Yale, Real Conservatorio de Madrid, Manhattan School of Music, Mannes, and the Royal Northern College of Music. They are highly sought-after soloists and chamber musicians, and have performed at such well-known international venues as Carnegie Hall, Teatro Colon, Palau de la Musica, Concertgebouw, Salle Cortot, and Yerevan Philharmonic Hall. The ensemble has also won the top prize in the J.C. Arriga Musical Festival. Violinist Sami Merdinian was recently named “the most prominent artist of the year” by the Argentinean press. Sofya Melikyan and Ani Kalayjian, both former beneficiaries of AGBU scholarships, have participated in a number of AGBU's Performing Arts Concerts.
The SIMA Musical Trio was in Australia to compete in the Melbourne Chamber Music Competition, a competition highly regarded around the word for its integrity and high standard of performance. It was organized by Chamber Music Australia (CMA). Though the musicians did not ultimately win the competition, they put on yet another outstanding, memorable performance. They won the hearts of the audience members and were praised for their talent and professionalism. Moreover, they were recognized for their noble dedication to their art.
