On June 14, 2009, AGBU's Scout Troop "Erevan 50" celebrated 10 years of activities by hosting an African-themed day of events in Montevideo, Uruguay. The event, appropriately titled "Scout Park in Africa," was held in the Misak Kouyoumdjian Gymnasium of the AGBU Montevideo Center.
The main goal of the all-day event was to offer the kids a new and unique series of activities and entertainment. The doors were open free of charge to all children in the community, who wanted to become a part of the special scouting adventure day. Kids were able to enjoy a variety of non-traditional games and activities while getting an exciting cultural lesson along the way.
The creative activities included "The Kilimanjaro Climb," "The Extreme Liana," "The Tomb of the Pharaoh," "The Cage of Ashantis," and "The Pyramid of Keops," the latter consisting of an extravagant hanging monkey bridge contraption. Nearly 400 kids and adults were enthralled by the elaborate décor, as they were temporarily transported to the faraway continent of Africa.
The Scout Park in Africa event was widely successful due to the intricate planning by the coordinators. Children and adults of all ages were welcome, with many children from AGBU's Nubarian School, young individuals from different local scout troops and other Armenian institutions coming by to visit and participate. Along with providing a truly memorable day for all attendees, the AGBU Scout Troop was able to collect toys for underprivileged children. The Scouts hopes to continue events of this kind in the future, bringing together a broad cross-section of people in the community.
