Montevideo Chapter Marks AGBU’s and Local School’s Anniversaries with Events and Concert

The AGBU Montevideo Chapter celebrated two anniversaries in one, marking both the Union’s 107 years of existence and the 40th anniversary of the AGBU Nubarian-Manoogian School. The celebrations culminated with a concert by vocalist Harout Hagopian two weeks later.

The commemoration began on the morning of April 15, 2013, with the ceremonial laying of a wreath before the bust of founder Boghos Nubar at the entrance of the AGBU complex. Celebrations continued that evening with a joint performance of AGBU’s Grung Choir and Nubarian students.

In his address to the audience, Montevideo Chapter Chair Haigaz Moumdjian gave an overview of AGBU’s global activities, with an emphasis on those in Armenia. He also called on fellow Uruguayan Armenians to support Syrian Armenians, indicating that the chapter’s executive board is planning an initiative in this regard.

Following Moumdjian’s speech, Education Committee Chair Gustavo Zulamian took the podium to walk attendees through key moments leading up to the opening of the Nubarian School. He mentioned IT initiatives applied to educational purposes, including the Dziran Dzrakir, which combines the tools of AGBU’s Armenian Virtual College with computer resources developed in-house by the school.

One of the highlights of the event was the sealing of a time capsule to be unlocked in 40 years, in which students deposited scrolls with pictures, letters from alumni, school uniforms and other memorabilia. 

The evening culminated with the presentation of a mural-size photo of a stamp issued by Uruguay in commemoration of Nubarian School’s 40th anniversary. Mr. Moumdjian and Primate of the Armenian Church in Uruguay, Archbishop Hagop Kelendjian unveiled the image to enthusiastic applause.

The celebrations concluded two weeks later on a festive note, with a standing room only concert on May 6, 2013, by Armenian singer Harout Hagopian, invited from Los Angeles especially for the occasion. Hagopian offered a rich repertoire of Armenian songs, inviting children to join him on stage and bringing the enthusiastic audience to its feet in the aisles of Teatro El Galpón.
