AGBU kicked off its 2008 World Games in high spirits last night in Montevideo, Uruguay with close to 800 people attending the Opening Ceremonies at the local Center. Spectators cheered from the fully packed stands as athletes from Buenos Aires, Cordoba, Los Angeles, Montevideo, Pasadena, Sao Paolo and Toronto marched in with their national flags, which was followed by a multimedia presentation tying together the history of Armenians, AGBU and the Montevideo Chapter. Highlights of the evening included welcoming remarks by His Excellency Vladimir Garmirshalian, Ambassador Plenipotentiary of Armenia to Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Uruguay; Central Board Member Ruben Kechichian of Buenos Aires; and Montevideo Chapter Chair Hagop Chamikian, who recognized World Games benefactor Albert Boyajian with a token plaque. US Ambassador to Uruguay, His Excellency Frank Baxter was also present at the event with his wife. The competitions are well underway in two gymnasiums at the AGBU Center in Uruguay's capital city.
