Krikor Satamian, Celebrated Artist and Founding Director of AGBU Theater Companies, Honored during Los Angeles Armenian Heritage Month
AGBU is proud to congratulate the Artistic Director of the AGBU Ardavazt Theater Company, Mr. Krikor Satamian, who was one of a select few community leaders honored during Los Angeles’s Armenian Heritage Month in October. A celebrated actor, director and entertainer, Mr. Satamian has been a fixture in the local arts community for more than 50 years, and the award spotlights his many achievements both in California and abroad.
Mr. Satamian launched his decades-long career in 1960, when, as a bright young actor, he joined the AGBU Vahram Papazian Theater Group in Lebanon. In the years that followed, he founded AGBU theater companies in Boston, Detroit, New York and Philadelphia. At the same time, he directed 75 performances, starred in over 80 productions, and translated 20 plays from both French and English into Armenian, bringing comedy and drama to audiences around the globe.
The Certificate of Commendation from the City of Los Angeles is the most recent in a series of awards that mark Mr. Satamian’s impressive resume. In 2011, he received the Armenian Diaspora Ministry’s William Saroyan Medal, as well as the Gold Medal from Armenia’s Culture Ministry. At the special commemorative event in the Los Angeles City Council Chambers, City Councilmembers Eric Garcetti and Paul Krekorian praised Mr. Satamian for the important role he has played in the local diaspora community. Councilmember Krekorian remarked, “For more than a century, Armenian-Americans have helped to weave the fabric of our city and country through the richness of their cultural heritage. Today, I am proud to honor that heritage and the extraordinary contributions of our honorees to the great wealth of cultural diversity that makes Los Angeles unique.”
