On Sunday, March 22, 2015, members of AGBU Antranik were proud to take part in Beirut’s BankMed Youth Race, the first ever youth race in the Middle East.
On Sunday, March 22, 2015, members of AGBU Antranik were proud to take part in Beirut’s BankMed Youth Race, the first youth race in the Middle East.
Organized in cooperation with the Ministry of Education and Higher Education, the Ministry of Social Affairs, the Higher Council of Childhood and the Lebanese Athletics Federation with the support of the Municipality of Dbayeh, the race drew more than 6,000 children ages 7 to 17. AGBU Antranik scouts cheered on the runners in the last leg of the race and distributed medals, gift bags and water after they crossed the finish line.
Among the runners were also 100 students from AGBU Lebanon schools and 300 members of other Armenian organizations who were all united under one slogan: I Remember and I Demand. They ran to raise awareness about the Armenian Genocide and honor the memory of the victims. Under the patronage of the Armenian Genocide Centenary Commemoration Committee, the runners wore T-shirts emblazoned with their pledge.
“It was a great experience for all of us. It was just wonderful seeing such team spirit and enthusiasm about running. I hope that many of them will become future marathon runners,” says Anita Lebiar, director of AGBU Lebanon District.
In November 2014, AGBU Antranik participated in the Beirut Marathon and received the “Best New NGO” award from the Beirut Marathon Association. Read more about their story here.
