Egypt District Chairman Berdj Terzian Presents Digitized Collection of Egyptian-Armenian Newspaper "Arev" to Armenia's National Library

Berdj Terzian presents the digital collection of 'Arev' newspaper to the Armenian National Library.
Berdj Terzian, Chairman of AGBU Egypt District Committee, together with his wife Seta, visited the National Library of Armenia in Yerevan on July 7, in order to participate in the program organized on the occasion of National Library Day. Terzian had been in Armenia to participate in the pan-Armenian writers' conference, as well as the conference devoted to the status of Western Armenian language teaching in the Armenian diaspora, both of which were held in the city of Tsaghkadzor.
Although National Library Day is normally marked on July 4 in Armenia, the program that took place on July 7 was characterized by a special development as the Egyptian-Armenian intellectual Terzian, who serves as advisor to the editors of "Deghegadou" (Reporter), the official organ of AGBU Cairo, and the Arabic-language periodical "Arek," turned over a rich digitized collection of issues of "Arev" daily published in Cairo between 1915 and 2000.
Davit Sargsian, director of the National Library of Armenia, expressed thanks for this valuable donation. He also congratulated the library staff on this special day.
Speaking about the historical value of the digitized collection, Terzian underscored the historical significance of the issues of "Arev" published between 1915 and 1923, whose pages shed light on the Armenian Genocide and important events in diasporan Armenian life in the succeeding years. He stated that the digitization of the collection was realized by decision of the AGBU Cairo Chapter and underwritten by the AGBU Cairo Satenig Chaker Fund. It is appropriate to mention that, in October 2009, Berdj Terzian, who is an ardent defender of the Armenian press, published a booklet entitled "Inchbess Donvetsav Hay Barperagan Mamouli 200-Amyage Yekibdosi mech" (How the Bicentennial of Armenian Periodical Press Was Celebrated in Egypt), which contains details about the organization of the exhibit devoted to the second centennial of the Armenian press in Egypt.
Also present at the program was Ashot Ghazarian, director of AGBU‘s office in Armenia. In congratulating the library's staff on this special day, he expressed satisfaction that, despite numerous difficulties, the love for and interest in Armenian books displayed by the youth is increasing on a daily basis, and the digitization of literature and the use of other contemporary media promote the rekindling of interest in Armenian books among the youth.
