The AGBU Demirdjian Center’s Summer Camp in Lebanon hosted its annual end-of-season fiesta last month, bringing to a close its 16th season filled with fun and learning.

This year, camp added brand-new activities to its regular schedule: a dance academy and football coaching. Both kept campers on their feet—whether they were out on the field or inside practicing Armenian folk dances, hip-hop, salsa, and zumba. In between, they went on outings to the nearby Waves Water Park, the recently unveiled educational theme park KidzMondo, a kid-sized replica of a real city, as well as hiking trails, where they were led by a team of professional guides.

As part of the summer theme, “Back to our Roots,” participants also learned about the historic cities of Adana, Aintab, Hadjin, Marash, Sis and Zeitoun, and their different cuisines, songs and traditions. Every year since its founding in 1997, the camp has introduced a new educational theme, and this year the students were divided into groups named after those cities to learn more about their ancestors.

The “Back to our Roots” theme, and the special weekly activity, “Knowledge is Power” introduced this summer’s 140 campers to new people, places and ideas. Week after week, the children looked forward to meeting guest speakers who led talks on ancient Cilicia, put together Armenian dishes during food demonstrations, or gave them a look into the world of fashion design and photography.

A special visit to the AGBU-AYA Scouts campsite gave them something else to look forward to—one day wearing the AGBU scout badges themselves. The scouts applauded the campers for their community service initiatives; funds raised through their three bake sales were donated to the Zvartnots Center, which serves special needs children, and the Kunhadi organization, which promotes road safety.
