Armenian Virtual College Presented in St. Petersburg

On September 19, 2010, members of the Armenian community of St. Petersburg came together in the Events Hall of the Armenian Apostolic Church to watch a presentation of the Armenian Virtual College (AVC), AGBU's newest learning institute and the world's first online Armenian school.
Yervant Zorian, AGBU Central Board member and AVC chairman, made the presentation at the event organized by Nor Serund (New Generation) youth organization. In attendance were community representatives, including head of the local Armenian community, Karen Mkrtchyan, youths, and students.
Following an opening speech by Nor Serund representative Sedrak Kalashyan, Dr. Zorian spoke about the educational and youth programs of AGBU, emphasizing the importance of the AVC in Russia and the world today. Toward the end of the event, Zorian responded to questions from the audience. Kalashyan and community activist Vahan Babakhanian acted as translators. Father Nshan Petrosyan, spiritual leader of the Armenian community of Saint Petersburg, made closing remarks.
Officially launched in June 2009, AVC is an Internet-based accredited distance-learning program that utilizes new technologies to facilitate Armenian studies to students throughout the world. Courses are available at varying skill levels to meet all students' needs. Current departments are Armenian history, language, and culture. Students can choose from six languages of instruction: Western and Eastern Armenian, English, Russian, French and Spanish. Besides providing online courses, AVC offers "mixed education," a combination of online and traditional classroom instruction.
