Argentinean Students Arrive in California, Kicking Off This Year’s Exchange Program

This past Friday, students from the AGBU Marie Manoogian Institute in Buenos Aires packed not only their schoolbags but their suitcases, as well, flying to Los Angeles to participate in the Annual Student Exchange program with the AGBU Manoogian-Demirdjian School (MDS).
The 18 young Argentinians received a warm welcome from their MDS counterparts, who will guide them through a complete cultural immersion experience over the next three weeks. The youth will participate in a rich educational curriculum that includes classes in Armenian, art, computer, dance, English conversation, sports, and writing and literature. Together alongside their Californian peers, the 10th and 11th graders will explore differences in their local cultures and the similarities that unite them as diasporan Armenians. When they’re not in the classroom, the exchange students will be getting to know both their host families, and the many tourist destinations that Southern California has to offer.
The Buenos Aires students are chaperoned by the Marie Manoogian Institute’s English Department coordinator Miriam Boghossian Tabakian, who created the exchange program with AGBU Central Board member Carol Aslanian in 1999. Since then, the program has created dozens of young, cultural ambassadors. This year’s initiative will continue in July, when the MDS students travel to Buenos Aires.
