Alexander Primary School Debating Teams Wins Interschool Competition
AGBU Alexander Primary School Debating Team holds their trophy from the Forest District Interschool Debating Competition 2010.
From the AGBU Alexander Primary School we received the following exciting news:
On Thursday, 17th June 2010 AGBU Alexander Primary School hosted the fourth debate in the ‘Forest District Interschool Debating Competition’. Alexander school was represented by Aren Bedikian, Sevag Keoshgerian, Cassandra Stephan and Michael Tateossian. Virginia Keshishian and Hagop Topouzian took on the duties of timekeeper and chairperson. The students were challenged by the topic ‘Governor Phillip would be pleased with Australia’. Our team presented the negative case against John Colet School. Both teams had researched the topic well and were able to present excellent arguments. Each student was able to listen carefully to the arguments of the opposition and devise excellent rebuts. It was an interesting and enjoyable debate. It was very closely fought, with our team coming up with the win in the end. The Sydney Japanese School and Hamazkaine A & S Galstaun College participated in the second debate for the afternoon - ‘Australia should become a Republic’. Again this was a very entertaining and close debate with Galstaun College taking the win. The win for our school made us undefeated in the competition. This meant that there was no need for finals and it is our pleasure to inform you that we have retained the debating trophy for the second year running. Once again we would like to congratulate all the students from Years 4-6. Every student has had a hand in our win. Each week it has been a class effort to prepare the debate with every child preparing speeches and rebuts. Without the efforts of the whole class the win would not have been possible. Throughout the debates the students have developed the skills of clear thinking, thorough research, confident presentation and the ability to hear and understand what others are saying. We are very proud of their efforts and the way they have represented the school. This was the seventh win for Alexander school, in a competition that has been running for fourteen years. Galstaun College has won it four times, Sydney Japanese School three times and the John Colet School once. There is no doubt that this well deserved win has once again been made possible thanks to the great support and guidance provided by Mrs Vicky Dernee. All credit to her and a big thank you on behalf of the students and parents.
