On March 11, AGBU YP Greater New York, AGBU New York Special Events Committee (NYSEC) and AGBU New York Summer Internship Program (NYSIP) welcomed women’s leadership expert Monique Svazlian Tallon to the AGBU Central Office in New York for a presentation on her book, Leading Gracefully: A Woman’s Guide to Confident, Authentic and Effective Leadership.
Tallon, a NYSIP alumna, is the CEO of Highest Path Consulting, which specializes in executive coaching and training to empower next-generation women leaders. In 2013, she founded the Women and Power Leadership Forum and is a writer for the Huffington Post on topics related to women’s leadership. Her business background includes working at several large corporations in Silicon Valley.
In her book, Tallon introduces the Feminine Leadership ModelTM, a visionary roadmap for leadership designed to play to women’s strengths. Her book presents neuroscience research that tells us that women’s brains are wired for empathy, intuition and collaboration—the same qualities sought after in today’s leaders. Through personal stories and those of other female executives and entrepreneurs in technology, science, retail and non-profits, readers are taught to use feminine strengths, along with traditional traits, to break through the gender bias.
During her lecture, Tallon led audience members in exercises to develop the skillset to become an inclusive and effective leader and discussed seven feminine strengths, including vision, vulnerability, care, intuition, empathy, collaboration and humility. “For far too long, women have been told and taught that bringing their feminine selves to work is not OK. Many of us have had to give up some of our natural strengths just to ‘fit in’ with our male counterparts. Isn’t it time to examine if this has really served us, and think about whether we need to find a different approach, which includes all parts of ourselves—both masculine and feminine?” said Tallon.
