The perfect time to go green may just be during a white winter, as the AGBU Young Professionals of Sofia (YP Sofia) recently proved. On Friday, December 14, 2012, the group organized a fundraising dinner, “Together for Armenia,” in support of the pan-YP Greenhouse Project in the rural village of Barekamavan, Armenia. The event brought together over 45 guests to the city’s popular Chepishev restaurant for an evening of musical performances, auctions and fun benefitting one of the YPs’ most ambitious initiatives to date. Special guests included AGBU Sofia Chapter Chairwoman Sonia Avakian-Bedrosian and local clergy, with the presentation of the Greenhouse Project conducted by YP Sofia Chairwoman Silva Chemedikian.
The YP-sponsored greenhouse project marks part two of the “Go Green” campaign that took off during the AGBU Young Professionals Biennial Assembly in Chicago in 2009, when YPs, who represented over a dozen countries, broke new ground by launching an environmental project that would be conceived, funded and developed entirely by them. Their efforts helped transform a desolate area in the struggling border village of Khachik into a vibrant park and a future income-generating tourist generation. Now, the Barekamavan community is looking forward to welcoming YP-funded greenhouses, which will allow them to raise and sell fresh crops, revitalizing their village and creating more sustainable development across the country.
