Surprise celebrations for more than 1200 pensioners of the AGBU Senior Dining Centers and Syrian Armenian children
On December 28 and 29, AGBU Yerevan organized surprise celebrations for more than 1200 pensioners of the AGBU Senior Dining Centers and Syrian Armenian children. On both days, AGBU Yerevan staff and members of the AGBU Yerevan Scout Movement distributed packages of food and drinks for the holiday season and organized dances, games and a visit from Santa Claus for the children, ages six to thirteen. The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) also prepared gifts for the children on the day.
AGBU has been committed to helping Syrian Armenian refugees settling in Armenia. To date, more than 16,000 Syrian Armenians have arrived in Armenia according to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). While as many as 5,000 have since returned to Syria, the estimated 12,000 who remain continue to benefit from dozens of programs and initiatives designed to help them find affordable housing and secure employment. The Syrian Armenian Relief Coordination Center, run in the AGBU Vahe Karapetian Center in which the children’s celebration was held, is at the forefront of helping Syrian Armenian successfully integrate in Armenian society.
Pensioners in need visiting the AGBU and Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin’s three dining centers in Nork, Malatya and Arabkir also received special holiday packages in December: “For the people who could not come to the centers for health reasons, we made sure they received their gifts to make their holiday a little more festive,” said AGBU Yerevan Communications Director, Vartan Tsulikian. The Senior Dining Centers have been helping over 600 elderly pensioners in need since the independence of the Republic of Armenia. Six days a week, the elderly can come to the centers for a hot meal and conversation with friends and neighbors.
