Co-sponsored by AGBU Southern California District and the University of Southern California (USC) Institute of Armenian Studies, the “AGBU in Its Second Century” Centennial Symposium was held on October 28, 2006 at the USC Town and Gown conference facility with over 350 guests in attendance.
Part of a year-long series of district events in honor of AGBU’s Centennial, the symposium was the second in a two-part AGBU-USC initiative which was kicked off in February with a youth forum at the AGBU Pasadena Center. Both events were co-chaired by Dr. Vahram Biricik, AGBU Southern California District Committee (SCDC) Vice Chairman, and Dr. Mihran Agbabian, former AGBU Central Board Member and American University of Armenia President.
In light of geo-political changes in the diaspora and Armenia, AGBU spearheaded the project to gain valuable insight on how to strengthen its global outreach in the new millennium. The daylong symposium presented the findings of evaluative research conducted on AGBU by Dr. Matthew Jendian from California State University, Fresno on governance, financial management, and external relations; Ramela Grigorian Abbamontian from UCLA on cultural programs; Dr. Ani Moughamian from the Los Angeles Unified School District on education; Dr. Ani Yazedjian from Texas State University, San Marcos on youth, sports, and young professional programs; Dr. Harutyun Aleksanyan from the Armenian State Pedagogical University on Armenia-based programs; and Dr. Hrair Dekmejian, USC Institute of Armenian Studies Director, who served as symposium moderator and provided an overview of the findings.
Addresses were also given by Dr. Biricik; SCDC Chairman Vahe Imasdounian; Vatche Mankerian, USC Institute of Armenian Studies Program Manager; Dr. Silva Karayan from California Lutheran University on the professionalization of Armenian education; Dr. Peter Starr, Dean of USC College of Letters, Arts and Sciences; Carol Aslanian, AGBU Central Board Member; Professor Osheen Keshishian; the Honorable Paul Ignatius, former Secretary of the Navy, Under Secretary of the Army, Assistant Secretary of Defense; Reverend Father Ktrij Devejian on AGBU programs with the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin; and Dr. Agbabian on AGBU and higher education.
