AGBU Sydney Holds its First Joint Meeting in Over 50 Years

For the first time in the 52-year history of AGBU Sydney, committee members comprising all the branches of the AGBU Sydney tree gathered for a conference to discuss plans for the year to come. -

“It sends chills up my spine to see our graduates now leading AGBU Sydney’s youth movement and fulfilling the school motto ‘to grow and serve,’” said Manoug Demirjian, principal of the AGBU Alexander Primary School.
January 30 marked a memorable date for all the committees that constitute the AGBU Sydney community. For the first time in the 52-year history of the chapter, committee members comprising all the branches of the AGBU Sydney tree gathered for a conference to discuss plans for the year to come.
One of the key goals of the conference was to set goals for AGBU Sydney to ‘think bigger’ by organizing joint events and fundraising ventures. It also included a discussion about strengthening AGBU Sydney’s ties to other AGBU chapters both within Australia and around the world.
In his remarks, AGBU Sydney chairman Toros Boghossian commented on the significance of the event: “This conference is the perfect opportunity to advance the communication and cooperation of everyone who works for our community. It comes at a time of real momentum in Sydney. It’s also a great way to thank everyone for their hard work in building this momentum.”
Attendees of the conference heard from representatives of all of the groups that work tirelessly for the Armenian community of Sydney. Managing director of the chapter Sarkis Manoukian opened the conference and was followed by Manoug Demirjian from the AGBU Alexander Primary School; Silvia Aghabekian and Khatchig Boghossian from the AGBU Alex Manoogian Saturday School; Kevork Dertadian from AGBU Youth; Natasha Dertadian from the AGBU Sports; and Nazarena Arabean from the newly formed Tamzara Armenian Folk Dance Group.
In his comments to the audience Principal Manoug said: “It sends chills up my spine to see our graduates now leading AGBU Sydney’s youth movement and fulfilling the school motto ‘to grow and serve.’” Kevork Dertadian echoed Manoug’s sentiments by declaring that “2016 will be all about the kids,” hinting at the start of a new Miniball team as well as announcing that the Tamzara Armenian Folk Dance Group will begin a kids program in the coming months.
The day was capped off with an interactive discussion led by Carlos Khatchikian from AGBU Youth about how to streamline communication and cooperation within AGBU Sydney, which was followed by a question and answer session facilitated by Minas Dertadian. At the close of the event, everyone was energized about the future of the chapter and ready to take on a 2016.
