From April 17 to May 1, the Hagop Baronian theater group of Plovdiv, Bulgaria, performed "The Candidates of Miss Markrid" at the Armenian Cultural Hall in Plovdiv for Bulgarian-Armenians from around the country. Simon Khatchmanian directed the production, which was sponsored by AGBU Plovdiv, the St. Kevork Armenian Church of Plovdiv, and several private patrons.
The play starred Armenak Kazazian, Nounig Kafedjian, Khatchig Parseghian, Simona Pachadjian, Mkhitar Artinian, Vehanoush Sarkisian, Simon Khatchmanian and Mardik Pilibosian, whose lines were often drowned out by laughter from the audience. Garo Sarkisian handled the score. Sarkis Keshishian served as assistant director, while the veteran Armenian teacher Victoria Nersessian was the prompter.
AGBU Plovdiv is sponsoring a tour of "The Candidates of Miss Markrid" to the Armenian communities in Sliven and Varna in June.
