On July 7, 2015, AGBU Sofia hosted an event with acclaimed photographer, Zaven Sargsyan, to exhibit his newest work—a series of photographs documenting Armenian architecture—at the Sredets Gallery. The event was co-organized by AGBU Sofia, along with the Bulgarian Journalists Union and the Bulgarian Ministry of Culture.

Born in Yerevan, Sargsyan is a member of the Armenian Journalists Union as well as the founder and director of the Sergey Paradjanov Museum, named after the great Soviet-Armenian filmmaker. “Architecture occupies a unique place in Armenian culture,” writes Sargsyan. As a testament to perseverance and survival, he cites how many ancient stone and mortar buildings in Armenia have survived “the ravages of man and nature.”

During the event, the chair of AGBU Sofia, Sonia Avakian-Bedrosian, spoke on behalf of the chapter to express her pride in Sargsyan having chosen Bulgaria to exhibit his art. “These photos allow us to touch the soul of Armenia,” said Avakian-Bedrosian.
