On September 18, AGBU Montreal organized its annual Armenian Heritage Day in celebration of Armenian independence at the AGBU Alex Manoogian Cultural Center.

Co-organized by the AGBU Cultural Committee, AGBU Montreal Scouts and Marching Band, AGBU Montreal Youth Corps and the Canadian Armenian Political Affairs Committee, the event brought together 400 guests to enjoy Armenian culture, art, music, dance and history with performances by students from the AGBU Alex Manoogian School.

The students, ages six to eighteen, recited poetry by Barouyr Sevag and Yeghishé Charents, played music by Gomidas and Aram Khachaturian on the duduk, saxophone, piano and xylophone and performed Armenian dances. “There’s no better way in the diaspora to celebrate the independence of Armenia then to have talented young Armenians embrace their Armenian culture and identity through performances of dance, music, poetry,” said Chahé Tanachian, chairman of AGBU Montreal.

As part of the heritage day celebration, political candidates—Stéphane Dion of the Liberal Party of Canada and Maria Mourani of the New Democratic Party—were invited to celebrate Armenia’s independence along with the guests. Mourani, who is running in a district with one of the largest populations of Armenians in Montreal, spoke on behalf of Thomas Mulcair, leader of the New Democratic Party, and promised to strengthen ties with Armenia by opening a new trade and consular office in Yerevan.
