On July 25, 2015, AGBU Melbourne gathered to watch a production of the play 100 Years Later, written by Berge Zeytuntsyan. Performed by the AGBU Melbourne Hagop Baronian Theatre Group, the play dramatizes a meeting between the grandson of a high-ranking Ottoman official and the grandson of the Armenian man who assassinated him.
“The play not only showcases a little known chapter of our recent history,” said Gloria Hotakorzian, vice chair of AGBU Melbourne. “But it also brings to the surface raw emotions that Armenians have been feeling worldwide during the centenary of the Armenian Genocide.”
The Hagop Baronian Theatre Group has entertained Melbourne audiences for decades, but in the past, has principally relied on comedic pieces. With the significance of the centenary, however, it decided to mount a dramatic production. While the play was performed in Armenian, it also included surtitles in English to make it accessible to a wider audience.
“It’s about time that our Melbourne community witnessed a historic play of this caliber! AGBU Melbourne works closely in line with our charter in providing our community with all facets of Armenian history and culture with a good dash of fun and entertainment,” said Maral Tchorbadjian, chair of AGBU Melbourne.
