Every year, the Annual United Nations-Armenians Gathering brings together its Armenian NGOs, representatives and employees to celebrate the New Year and share ideas for future collaborations.
Not to break with that tradition, on Wednesday, January 9, 2013, AGBU was proud to host the Annual UN Gathering at its Central Office in New York. Attendees were welcomed by Armenia’s Permanent Representative to the UN, His Excellency Garen Nazarian, who expressed his support for the joint initiative and gave a brief update on UN activities in Armenia during the past year. Addressing the 40-plus guests, Ambassador Nazarian remarked that although 2012 was a trying year for many around the world, and especially for fellow Armenians in Syria, “Today, it is really commendable to see the effective mobilization and genuine efforts of Armenian organizations working hand in hand with the Armenian government to mitigate the suffering of displaced Armenians and those affected as a result of that crisis. We hope that bloodshed will stop soon and peace will be restored in Syria.” He concluded with a reminder that, “While we celebrate, we also declare that we have responsibility to continue our partnership, our common determination to work together for a safer world, prosperous Armenia and that we have responsibility to stand united and work united.”
While many of the guests were looking forward to the new year, some were reminiscing about the past. A group of former students of the Armenian University of Armenia shared memories from their graduate school years and reflected on ways their education helped them advance from the university’s classrooms in Yerevan to the UN’s offices in New York. They represent the first graduating class of AUA and will be celebrating the university’s 20th anniversary this coming fall.
