In  December, January and February, the sixth season of the AGBU Buenos Aires Summer Day Camp [Colonia de Vacaciones] set a record by welcoming 847 children, ages 3 to 12.

The 97,000-square-foot AGBU Alex Manoogian Center—with its half Olympic-size swimming pool, state-of-the-art classrooms, two fully equipped kitchens and an indoor multisport center—was the perfect setting for a wide array of camp activities, including swimming, outdoor games, plays, cooking, handicrafts and the much-anticipated Movie Day every Friday.

Each day, campers—split into groups of at most 30 children—were supervised by a team of teachers, coaches, professional counselors and volunteers from different AGBU sports teams, adding up to nearly 50 staff members and volunteers.

Though the majority of the children were not of Armenian heritage, they had the opportunity to become acquainted with different aspects of Armenian culture through dance lessons, painting, and especially cooking classes, where sarma and manti were the objects of a culinary talent competition among older campers.

Ensuring a safe environment and a nurturing atmosphere was the top priority for the team, led by camp coordinator Miguel Agaya. Every week, his team planned activities that were not only fun, but also educational: “Our goal was to keep campers entertained while providing them with new skills and knowledge,” explained Agaya.
