In tribute to AGBU’s upcoming Centennial in 2006, the Buenos Aires Chapter sponsored its inaugural “Megaevento Cultural,” a massive cultural festival, this September, attracting over 4,000 spectators to the city’s Exhibition Center, and 1000 viewers online, becoming AGBU’s first event broadcast live on the Internet. Among those in attendance were AGBU Central Board Members Carol Aslanian and Sam Simonian; AGBU Buenos Aires leaders, members and friends; AGBU Cordoba and Montevideo Chapter representatives; and Armenians and Argentineans alike. Proceeds raised from the event were donated to the city’s Doctor Pedro de Elizalde Children’s Hospital.

Held under the auspices of the City of Buenos Aires and the local Embassy of the Republic of Armenia, the AGBU festival, entitled “Armenia, One People, One Nation, One Culture,” united over 500 performers from over 20 South American Armenian cultural groups for the first time ever.

With Laura Yorghanian, a well-known local television and radio reporter, as Master of Ceremonies, the six-hour program of song and dance kicked off with a segment devoted to the AGBU Marie Manoogian Institute, followed by song and dance performances from Argentina (Buenos Aires, Cordoba), Uruguay (Montevideo) and as far as San Fernando Valley, California.

As a gesture of gratitude, the Chapter also hosted a luncheon at the AGBU Buenos Aires Center where all participating cultural groups were presented with a special certificate and every performer with a medal.
