Shared Catastrophe: 1914-2019

  |   Fair Lawn, NJ   |   Event Details

A Discussion with Author Kemal Yalçin

Moderated by Nurhan Becidyan

The Ottoman Empire deported, killed, or otherwise persecuted staggering numbers of its non-Turkish, non-Muslim citizens, setting a modern precedent for how a regime can commit genocide in pursuit of political ends while largely escaping accountability. While this brutal history is most widely known in the case of the Armenians, few appreciate the extent to which Assyrian subjects suffered and died under similar policies.

Turkish author Kemal Yalçın provides a much-needed opportunity to learn about the shared experience of Christian nations in the empire and republic. He will present his study of the Assyrian Genocide, or Seyfo, the Armenian Genocide, and the post-1915 experience of hidden and open Christians. The author will speak in Turkish, which will be translated to English.

Join us and meet author and journalist Kemal Yalçin.  He has published eight books covering the Armenian and Assyrian genocides. He resides in Germany. Nurhan Becidyan is a local activist and board member of the National Association for Armenian Studies and Research.

Presentation by Taner Akçam: Oppression to Extermination – Revisiting the Final Decision

  |   Fair Lawn, NJ   |   Event Details

Dr. Bahattin Şakir, the head of the Special Organization tasked with carrying out the genocide, wrote on March 3, 1915, that the Committee of Union and Progress “has decided to free the homeland from the inordinate ambitions of this accursed nation….[and] to annihilate all of Armenians living within Turkey, not to allow a single one to remain.” Until now, Şakir’s letter has not been considered authentic and has been ignored by researchers.

Based on recently uncovered archival sources and documents, Dr. Akçam will shed light on the role played by provincial governors in pressing upon the central government to adopt an empire-wide policy of extermination. The first decision to exterminate Armenians was taken on December 1, 1914 in Erzurum.

Join Taner Akçam as he demonstrates, for the first time in a public forum, the letter’s authenticity, revisits the timing of the final decision, and examines their significance in deconstructing Turkey’s denialist façade.
