The Armenian General Benevolent Union has become the first Armenian organization to make the prestigious top 100 list of nonprofit organizations in the United States, according to a nation-wide survey of thousands of charities. The survey conducted by the Non- Profit Times and Master Software Corporation, scrutinized thousands of organic before selecting the top 100, Non-Profit Times Editor Larry Sterne told AGBU-AIS.
The Non-Profit Time (NPT) is America's leading monthly publication for nonprofit news, marketing and management. It distributed in the United States, Canada and Europe to qualified, full-time non-profit executives.
"This is the second year we are doing this, and at this time of the year, the top list is something which a lot of people look forward said. Using state-of- the-art scientific methods researchers from NPT spent months going over data provided by a variety of sources, including the Form 990 tax returns of thousands of nonprofit organizations. The ABGU established in 1906 to "preserve and promote the Armenian language, identity and heritage through educational, cultural and social programs," was ranked 88th on the list of America's 100 Biggest Charities.
"All things consider the AGBU ranked very high. To be on the top 100 is something special because that list is in effect boiled down from an original list of several thousand," Sterne said.
The NPT 100 list America's Biggest Charities was led by the Young Man Christian Association. The United Jewish Appeal came it as number 11; Save the Children Federation was number 30; Greenpeace USA number 53; Amnesty International number 85; and the AGBU at 88 -- followed sun famous non-profit organizations as the American Institute for Cancer Research which occupied the 94th place and the American Foundation for the Blind which occupied the 97th place. Money Magazine December, 1990 issue also listed AGBU in the 100 list of American nonprofit organizations.
