BERKELEY, CA (AGBU-AIS) The Armenian General Benevolent Union was a little known organization to a group of university graduates in Yerevan until word came that they were chosen to study in the United States for faculty positions in the soon-to-be-built American University of Armenia.

The Armenian General Benevolent Union has become the first Armenian organization to make the prestigious top 100 list of nonprofit organizations in the United States, according to a nation-wide survey of thousands of charities. The survey conducted by the Non- Profit Times and Master Software Corporation, scrutinized thousands of organic before selecting the top 100, Non-Profit Times Editor Larry Sterne told AGBU-AIS.

This meeting inaugurates the 84th year of the AGBU. Scanning the history of this organization one can only be amazed at the longevity, dedication, generosity and leadership exhibited by its ever faithful members. Through the worst of times and the best of times, the AGBU has never lost its commitment to provide a global service and vision to the Armenian people.

With the experience of this past year, as pain and sadness diminished and determination sprung forth, we have accepted the fact that recovery will be a long, slow process; that cultural differences can be daunting and the lack of technology, human resources and supplies in Armenia a continuous hindrance to any wishful speedy progress.
